Sir Allan Henry Shafto Adair, 6th Baronet was born on 3 November 1897 at London as the only child of Sir Robert Shafto Adair, 5th Baronet, and Mary Bosanquet. His education acquired in years 1912-1916 at the Harrow School.

Adair joins the army, receiving his first commission on 02.05.1916 when he becomes a Second Lieutenant of the 5th (Reserve) Battalion of the Grenadier Guards (British Army Officers). Shortly after his commission he is sent with 2nd Company, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards to France, to battle fields of WWI as a company Lieutenant. Here he suffer injury which curiously is not from the battle. He is riding bicycle and suffer injury. This is cause why he is absent by unit from June 1917 till January 1918. When he returns to unit in January 1918, he discovers that the unit has suffered heavy losses caused by its participation in the battles specially Passchendaele.

02.12.1918 is awarded with Military Cross for leading his company in thick fog under heavy fire and achieving its objective (Britishempire, The Gazette No. 31043). This occurred during his tenure as company commander 22.09 till 11.11.1918 as a acting Captain.

He received his second Military Cross shortly after end of war. 02.04.1919 for conspicuous gallantry demonstrated in the combate at Preux-au-Sart, 04.11.1918 when company under his command was facing a machine gun line, captured part of this line and although wounded in the leg, he continued in command until relieved (British Army Officers).

After the end of the war, he and his battalion returns to London and receives the permanent rank of lieutenant with retroactive effect. From October.1922 till 10.1923 served at Guards Depot in Caterham.

On 29.09.1923, he is promoted to a Captain, assigned to the 2nd Battalion. In period from 01.02.1926 until 31.01.1930 serves as Staff Captain, HQ London District. Finally is promoted 22.05.1932 to Major and assigned to the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, where he also served as an acting deputy commander from 1939 until April 1940.

For a short period (12.04.1940-07.05.1940) he works as a chief instructor at the 161 Officer Cadet Training Unit in Camberley, and on 08.05.1940 he is assigned back to his unit as a commanding officer of of the 3rd Battalion with the rank of acting Lieutenant Colonel (British Army Officers).

Together with his unit, participates in the operations at the France and the Belgium and is one of the units that holds the perimeter during the evacuation from Dunkirk. For his actions during this period, he is awarded with the DSO (The Gazette No. 34931) and became a Lieutenant Colonel on 19.09.1940.

On October 17, 1940, he was given command of the 30th Independent Infantry Brigade (Guards), which was from September 15, 1941 transformed to the 6th Guards Armoured Brigade (British Army Officers) with the rank of temporary Brigadier.



From 02.09.1942 until December 1945 he is appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Guards Armoured Division and 30.06.1943 promoted to Colonel, from 21.09.1942 he held this office as a temporary Major General (British Army Officers).

After 21 months of unit training in the UK, together with the unit, he arrives on the European battlefields on 28.06.1944. He leads the division during the European campaign until the end of the war and took part in most of the major European battles, advancing through North West Europe and Germany until its surrender in May 1945. After end of war division stays in Germany as a occupation forces and since 12.06.1945 is transformed to infantry division.

From December 1945 to November 1946, is given him new assignment General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 13th Infantry Division, which was located in Greece. On July 25, 1946, he received the rank of Major General, retroactive to November 12, 1944.



11.03.1947 he leaves army for the reserve, but remains in the Regular Army Reserve of Officers until 03.11.1957 when he reaches the legal retirement age of 60 years.

In his civil life he was in the years 1947 to 1957 Governor of the prestigious Harrow School, 1961 to 1974 Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and from 1969 to 1976 Deputy Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England.

He holds office of Deputy Lieutenant (DL) County Antrim in years 1969-1976 and has been Justice of the Peace (JP) for Suffolk County.

Adair inherited the peerage as well as the family mansion at Flixton Hall in Suffolk (however high maintenance costs forced him to sell the property in 1950 and settled in Raveningham, Norfolk).

Adair married Enid Violet Ida Ward on 08.041919 and they had three sons Lt. Desmond Allan Shafto Adair KIA Italy (CWGC), Robert Dudley Shafto Adair a three daughters Bridget Mary Adair, Juliet Enid Adair a Annabel Violet Adair.

He dies on 04.08.1988 and since none of his sons survived him, his title became extinct. He is buried with his wife Enid Violet Ida, who died age 87 in 1984, at Hatfield Road Cemetery, St Albans, Hertfordshire (masonicgreatwarproject).

Svoje prvé vzdelanie získal medzi rokmi 1912-1916 kedy navštevoval Harow školu.

Adair vstupije do armády pričom svoje prvé zaradenie dostáva 02.05.1916 kedy sa stáva druhým poručíkom 5. (záložního) praporu Granátnického gardového pluku (5th (Reserve) Battalion of the Grenadier Guards) (British Army Officers). Zakrátko na to, je prapor presunutý do bojov vo Francii a Belgii kde je Adair zaradený do 2. roty 3. praporu ako poručík roty. V čase od júla 1917 do januára 1918 sa lieči a je mimo svojej jednotky zo zranenia ktoré neutrpel v boji ale kuriozne liečenie si vyžiadala nehoda ktorú utrpel pri jazde na bicyklu. Keď sa vracia ku svojej jednotke v januári 1918 zisťuje, že jednotka utrpela ťažké straty spôsobené jej účasťou na bojoch u Passchendaele.

02.12.1918 je mu udelený vojenský kríž za jeho podporu a príkladné velenie roty v čase keď bol poverený od 22.09 do 11.11.1918 s hodnosťou povereného (acting) kapitana. Viedol svoju rotu vpred, v hmle a pod nepriatelskou palbou a splnil stanovený úkol (Britishempire, The Gazette No. 31043).

Svoj druhý kríž získava zakrátko po vojne, 02.04.1919 za príkladnu statočnosť preukázanú v bojoch u Preux-au-Sart, 04.11.1918 keď velili rote čeliac kulometnej linii, ktorej časť sa mu s jednotkou podarilo obsadiť a rote velí aj napriek tomu, že je zranený do nohy (British Army Officers).

Po skončení vojny sa spolu so svojim praporom vracia do Londýna a dostáva stálu hodnosť poručíka s retroaktivnou platnosťou.

Od októbra1922 do októbra 1923 slúži u Gardovej náhrade (Guards Depot) v Caterham.

29.09.1923 sa stáva kapitanom, pridelený k 2. praporu a v období od 01.02.1926 do 31.01.1930 slúžil ako štábný kapitán na vleitelstve londýnskeho okresu (HQ London District).

22.05.1932 sa stáva majorom a je pridelený k 3. praporu (3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards) u ktorého taktiež plní funkciu povereného zástupcu velitela a to až do apríla 1940.

Krátake obdobie pôsobí ako hlavný inštruktor u 161. výcvikovej dôstojníckej jednotky (161st Infantry Officer Cadet Training Unit) v Camberley, ale už 08.05.1940 je povolaný speť ku svojej jednotke kde je mu zverené velenie 3. praporu s hodnosťou povereného podplukovníka (British Army Officers).

Spolu so vojou jednotkou sa účastní operácii vo Francii a Belgii a jednou z jednotiek ktorá drží perimeter pri eveakuácii z Dunkirku.

Za svoje počínanie počas tohto obdobia je ocenený DSO (The Gazette No. 34931) povýšením na podplukovníka - 19.09.1940. 17.10.1940 je mu zverené velenie 30. samostatnej pešej gardovej brigády (30th Independent Infantry Brigade (Guards)) ktorá je k 15.09.1941 pretransformovaná na 6. gardovou obrněnou brigádu (6th Guards Armoured Brigade) (British Army Officers) s hodnosťou dočastného brigadiera.

02.09.1942 až do decembra 1945 velí ako generál hlavný velitel (GOC) Gardové obrněné divizi (Guards Armoured Division) a dostáva hodnosť plukovníka 30.06.1943. Vo velení divízie slúži od 21.09.1942 najprv ako poverený a potom ako dočastný generálmajor (British Army Officers).

Po 21 mesiacoch výcviku jednotky v UK, spolu s jednotkou prichádza na bojiská do Europy 28.06.1944. Divízii velí počas celého obdobia do konca vojny a účastní sa večšiny významných bitiev, postupujúc severozápadnou Europou a Nemeckom až do jeho kapitulácie v máji 1945. Následne jednotka zostáva v Nemecku ako okupačné sily a 12.06.1945 sa formácia pretransformovaná na pechotnú divíziu.

Od decembra 1945 do novembra 1946 dostáva pod velenie ako (GOC) 13. pešiu divíziu (13th Infantry Division) nachádzajúca sa v občisnkou vojnou zmietanom Grécku. 25.07.1946 dostáva hodnosť generálmajora s retroaktívnou plastnosťou platnosťou 12.11.1944.



11.03.1947 odchádza do rezervy ale ostáva v ako rezervista dôstojník (Regular Army Reserve of Officers) a to až kým 03.11.1957 nedosahuje zákonný vek 60 rokov na odchod do výslužby.

V rokoch 1947 do 1957 zastával post guvernéra prestížnej Harow školy, 1961 až 1974 plukovníkom Granátnického gardového pluku a 1969 až 1976 zástupcom velmajstra Spojenej velkej lóže Anglie.

1969-1976. zástupca poručíka (Deputy Lieutenant (DL)) okres Antrim. Zmierčí sudca pre okres Suffolk (Justice of the Peace (JP)).

Adair zdedil nobiliárny tutul ako aj rodinné sídlo v Flixton Hall in Suffolku (avšak vysoké náklady na údržbu ho prinútili nemovistost predat v roku 1950).

Adair sa 08.041919 oženil s Enid Violet Ida Ward a mali troch synov por. Desmond Allan Shafto Adair KIA v Itálii (CWGC), Robert Dudley Shafto Adair a 3 dcery Bridget Mary Adair, Juliet Enid Adair a Annabel Violet Adair.

Umiera 04.08.1988 a keďže niktorý z jeho synov ho neprežil jeho titul zaniká. Je pochovaný po boku svojej ženy Enid Violet Ida, ktorá umrela vo veku 87 v 1984, na Hatfield Road Cemetery, St Albans, Hertfordshire (masonicgreatwarproject)
